The Harvard Academy Scholars Program of The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies offers scholarships. It supports outstanding students at the start of their academic careers whose work combines excellence in a social science course.

The academy scholars are offered a full sponsorship and an annual stipend of $80,000 including other benefits of a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University and partner institutions in the United States.

The scholarship also supports those whose work combines fluency in a foreign language, other knowledge or expertise of other countries or regions outside of the United States and Canada, and superior social science skills.

Harvard Academy Scholars Program for 2024/ 2025 | Eligibility Criteria

  • Scholars nearing dissertation completion must be able to submit degree conferral documentation issued by their university registrar’s office by June 30, 2025, for an August 1, 2025, start date.
  • These awards are open to recipients of PhD or comparable doctoral degrees (within two years of the August 1, 2024, start date) and advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences.
  • Applications for this program from Individuals who currently hold or have completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship are not eligible to apply.
  • Additionally, applicants obtaining advanced doctorates in the social sciences are eligible to apply.

Terms of the Harvard Academy Scholars Program

Every year, five or six academy Scholars will be selected for two-year in-residence appointments with a yearly stipend of $80,000, along with the two years to be completed within a three-year window.

Year 1 of the fellowship must be taken up no later than the fall immediately following the postdoctoral fellowship offer. Deferrals or Delays at the start of Year 1 are not permitted. Year 1 of the fellowship must be taken up no later than the fall immediately following the postdoctoral fellowship offer.

Between Years 1 and 2, Academy Scholars may apply for a one-time leave (up to 12 months), either to accept or to continue with a tenure-track teaching appointment but for no other reason. In addition, Academy Scholars may not accept other sources of funding, awards, or obligations during their appointment.

All application materials must be submitted by the deadline of September 20, 2024. Late applications are not accepted.

Required Documents for the Harvard Academy Scholars Program

The following should be included in the completed application:

  • A research proposal should not exceed 2000 words and should include intellectual aims as well as planned methodological and disciplinary activities.
  • Three letters of endorsement
  • CV or resume with a list of publications
  • One O.N.E. sample, which must be in English, may be submitted. It should be an example of academic writing, such as a chapter from a doctoral dissertation or an article from a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Transcript of Ph.D. program in copy

The completed application will include:

  • One scholarly writing sample (e.g., PhD dissertation chapter or single-authored peer-reviewed academic journal article; fifty pages maximum; in English)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV); including a list of publications
  • Three letters of recommendation (uploaded to the online application directly and confidentially by the recommender by September 20, 2024)
  • Research proposal (2000 words maximum); including intellectual objectives and planned methodological and disciplinary work
  • All materials must be received by September 20, 2024. The selection process begins immediately thereafter. Applicants whose materials are incomplete are at a disadvantage when considered by the Selection Committee. Announcement of the awards will be made in December 2024.

Finalists must be available for a personal interview on our December 6, 2024, interview date. The Harvard Academy will pay for travel and hotel accommodations for the finalists to interview in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Guidelines for writing a research proposal and the scholarly writing sample

Your research proposal should be no longer than 2000 words. The Selection Committee is most interested in the relevance and the contribution your research makes to your discipline. These should be clear in the research proposal.

Please Note: References and citations will not count towards the word limit.
