The Education Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in Nigeria has expressed satisfaction with the over 85% resumption of secondary school students for the new academic year in the FCT. The acting Secretary, Malam Abdulrazeq Leremoh, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday, while briefing journalists after monitoring students and teachers’ resumption in some schools within the city.
Some of the schools visited included Government Science Secondary School, Pyakasa, Model Senior and Junior Secondary Schools, all in Maitama; and Women Education Centre, Wuse. Other schools visited include Christabel Schools, Wuye, a non-state school, and Local Education Authority Primary School, Jahi Express, Abuja Municipal Council.
Leramoh explained that the secretariat routinely monitors schools at the beginning of each term to check on students’ return and teachers’ readiness. This visit also allows the secretariat to respond to urgent issues. Leramoh reported that the students’ turnout and teachers’ preparedness for the new term are satisfactory. Most schools visited had an attendance rate of over 85%.
The schools will provide reports to the secretariat outlining their crucial requirements. The secretariat will then provide support based on the specific needs of each school, which may include hiring additional teachers as part of regular assistance to ensure quality education is delivered. At LEA Primary School in Jahi, the acting secretary commended the rehabilitation of a classroom and toilet facilities by Venture Furniture Nigeria Ltd. He encouraged other organizations to collaborate with the government to improve the quality of education in public schools throughout the FCT.
The Director of the Department of Quality Assurance, Dr. Favour Edem-Nse, assured parents of regular school monitoring to ensure adherence to minimum standards. One student, Abiakam David of Government Science Secondary School, Pyakasa, said that his target for the term was to be the best student in his class and make his parents and teachers proud.
