The Dutch government has announced plans to ban mobile phones from classrooms to prevent disruptions to learning. The initiative, in collaboration with the school, will take effect at the start of next year. The ban is not legally enforceable but may become so in the future. Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf emphasized that mobile phones do not belong in the classroom, as they disrupt learning. Studies have shown that limiting children’s screen time can improve cognition and concentration.
Another tech, such as tablets and smartwatches, is also included in the ban. The government will review the scheme at the end of the 2024/2025 school year to determine if a legal ban is needed. This follows Finland’s recent decision to change the law to make it easier to restrict phone use in schools.
