The New Zealand government offers full tertiary scholarships for qualified international students to study full-time at a New Zealand education institution or a Pacific university. The scholarships are available to citizens of selected countries in the Pacific, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The scholarships include full tuition fees, an establishment allowance, a living allowance, medical and travel insurance, travel to and from your own country and New Zealand at the start and end of your scholarship, and help with research and thesis costs for many postgraduate students.

With a full New Zealand Scholarship, you are sure to receive the following:

  • Full Tuition fees
  • Living allowance (a stipend of NZ $491 per week. This will help with a scholar’s basic living expenses, but it is not enough to cover the living costs of family members.
  • An establishment allowance of NZ $3000. This is to help with set-up costs in New Zealand. For example, you can use it for accommodation expenses, textbooks, or other study materials.
  • Travel Insurance
  • Help with research and thesis costs for many postgraduate students.

New Zealand University Scholarships

The University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship

The University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship is being made available for new International undergraduate and postgraduate students who are applying to study taught PGDip or Masters of 120 points or more, or who are applying to study undergraduate degrees (with overseas secondary or post-secondary qualifications).

Studies can be in any subject. The main purpose of the Scholarship is to attract new international students of high caliber to enroll in undergraduate or postgraduate study for 1 year or more at the University of Auckland.

Up to 50 Scholarships will be awarded bi-annually (depending on whether the candidate is commencing studies in Semester 1 or Semester 2), with each scholarship valued at up to $10,000, for postgraduate and undergraduate study.

180-credit aught Master’s Merit Scholarship at Lincoln University

Lincoln University offers scholarships of NZ $10,000 to qualifying international students to pursue one of the 10 credit-taught master’s programs.

Tongarewa Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington

The Victoria University of Wellington is making available the Tongarewa Scholarship to celebrate the University’s commitment to its international student community. Eligible applicants are those either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree program at Victoria University of Wellington.

Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for the Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested. There are up to 10 scholarships of NZ $10,000 for Bachelor and Masters degrees and up to 9 scholarships of NZ $5,000 for Masters degrees only.

University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarships

The scholarships are for talented international students who demonstrate excellent academic achievement and the potential to become global ambassadors for the University of Waikato.

The scholarship is worth up to NZ $10,000 applied to tuition fees. Applicants must be intending to enroll at the University of Waikato for the first time in either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

University of Otago International Research Masters Scholarships

The University of Otago International Master’s Award provides funding to support international students who are undertaking a thesis-based Master’s Degree at the University of Otago. The scholarship includes an NZ $17,172 stipend per annum plus a tuition fee waiver for 1 year capped at the domestic rate for a Master’s study (excluding student services fee and insurance).

Eligibility requirements for the New Zealand Government Scholarship

You must meet all of the eligibility criteria to apply for a New Zealand Government Scholarship. Below are some requirements:

  • You must be 18 years old or older when you start your scholarship.
  • You only need to apply for a student visa
  • Scholars are to contribute to their country’s social or economic development for two years after completing their scholarship study.
  • On their New Zealand government Scholarship application form, applicants must describe how their previous work experience relates to their proposed courses or careers.

Postgraduate applicants or applicants who finished high school a few years ago must have the following work experience:

  1. One year of full-time work experience (i.e. 30 hours or more per week)
  2. Two years of part-time work experience (i.e. up to 29 hours per week)

How to apply for a New Zealand Government Scholarship

  • Create a login to access the New Zealand government department, first, you need to register online. This registration system is called RealMe. You will need a RealMe login (username and password) to access the online New Zealand Government Scholarship application form.
  • You will also need the same RealMe login to apply for a student visa if you get a scholarship. Please remember your RealMe username and password. You will need this login to view, edit, and submit your New Zealand government Scholarship application form.
  • Register with the New Zealand Government Scholarships online application system
  • Use your eligibility code to register online with the New Zealand Government Scholarships online application system.
  • Complete and submit your application before the closing date
  • Use your RealMe login to access the New Zealand Government Scholarship online application system anytime between the opening and closing dates for your country.
